Off to Kenya

Hi Everyone,
I fly out of Canada later today. I am going to Kenya, for 6 months, through an internship with CIDA and College of the Rockies. I will be living in Nyeri and working with KENWA (Kenya Network of Women with AIDS). Here are a couple of links for more info about KENWA:

KENWA

Another site about KENWA

KENWA is a grassroots organization started by 5 HIV positive woman who lost their family and social support network upon learning about their positive status. It now supports about 5500 adults and 1700 children- supplying food and shelter to those in need, ARV drug therapy for about 850 people, counselling and dissemination of information about HIV/AIDS, among many of activities. Basically they do great work.

This Blog is a means of keeping in touch with as many folks updated as are interested in reading and seeing photos.

See many of you in 6 months!
Cheers,
Sam

Hi Sam,
its Dove (from Border Collie Rescue), I used to live in Kenya in Tumutumu (1 km down the road from Gagatika -between Karatina and Nyeri) you'll get to know it! Anyway, just wanted to say -have a great time there! I LOVED it and want to go back.
A few things I can think of for you: -make friends with the women on the matatus by giving them 'biscuits' (cookies)
-the chocolate peanut butter is really good!
-jam makes an excellent present when you go for tea at people's houses
-if you run into 'Strawberry Peter' (a local boy scout guide who is everywhere) tell him 'hi from Dove' and he is safe and will show you around and be your friend and never ask for anything
-if you can get the 'local volunteer discount' to go to The Ark overnight go for it! Its amazing.
-Samburu park is my favorite, if you get a chance
-there are always med students from abroad at PCEA Tumutumu hospital who are always good fun and I'm sure would lend a hand if you ever needed it
Best of Luck!
Dove
